31 Days of Character Creation #3 – Cyberpunk Red

Today we create a character in the game of Cyberpunk Red which has a neat lifepath system that fleshes out your character’s backstory. The system as describe on its official website:

The 4th Corporate War’s over and the big dogs have retreated to their corners to lick their wounds. That leaves everyone else to fend for themselves in a shattered world.

Cyberpunk RED is the latest edition of the classic roleplaying game of the Dark Future, featuring updated mechanics and new lore set in 2045, midway between the events of Cyberpunk 2020 and Cyberpunk 2077.

I rolled a d10 for a random role and got Lawman. Here’s his backstory.

Yaris Stryder was born a son of the wealthy owners of Paragon Financial, a European Union-based financier for weapons manufacturers. They were ruined by corporate sabotage from the young upstarts at Vitologic, using their focus on data storage as a means to sell internal secrets. Yaris was ten years old when his parents home was repossessed and he grew up in a ruined working class neighborhood on the outskirts of Utrecht.

As a young man he enrolled in the police academy, convincing himself that justice for his family could be attained. He became enamored with fellow student Aspect Jager, a young woman just a couple years older than him. As luck would have it they were both assigned to the same precinct after graduation and began a torrid love affair.

Jager mentioned her suspicion that a local boosterganger was a go-between for city hall and his gang. Two weeks later, while on patrol, Jager vanished and hasn’t been seen since. It has been one year now with no sign of her, all Yaris has left is a voice message she left him trying to decide on where they should eat when they got off their respective shifts. He listens to it obsessively, but no one knows about this.

Yaris got comfortable with his partner, Zed Kessel and shared the story of his family’s downfall as well as plans he’s harbored since childhood about ruining Vitologic. Since then, Vitologic has become the premier data broker in the European Union. Seeking to make some extra cash on the side, Kessel contacted the corp and told them about Yaris. Now Vitologic is tracking Yaris, which he has figured out, and he’s followed the trail to realize it was his own partner that turned on him.

About the only friend Yaris has is rookie officer Hui Genjo, a transfer from Beijing. Genjo shares Yaris’s hatred of Vitologic as they were responsible for mass economic devastation in his village.
