The Wildsea is one of the more unique and interesting tabletop RPGs to have come out in recent years. It borrows mechanics from several other systems, most notably Blades in the Dark. It’s world is one unlike any else, here’s the description from the official website:
Some three hundred years ago the empires of the world were toppled by a wave of fast growing greenery, a tide of rampant growth spilling from the West known as the Verdancy. Now chainsaw-driven ships cut their way across dense treetop waves, their engines powered by oilfruit, rope-golems, honey and pride.
You play a wildsailor, part of a motley crew consisting of humanity’s weathered descendants, cactoid gunslingers, centipedal fungi, silk-clothed spiderfolk, and other, stranger things. With your fellow crewmembers, you’ll journey across the lingin’ tide discovering charts, pursuing drives, and avoiding mires of the deep.
The Wildsea hungers and grows, roots sinking deep into the forest floor as the waves above ripple with life. What will you discover in its depths?
Here’s the background for the character I rolled up:
Saguaro was born in the rugged heights of the Eaten East, a series of jagged peaks that add variation to an otherwise blasted land. His lineage as an Ektus granted him a sturdy, thorn-covered body that has always marked him as both protector and outcast. Among the Ektus settlements scattered across the Wildsea, Saguaro earned a reputation as a problem-solver—a role not easily embraced in a community wary of outsiders and change. Saguaro cuts an imposing figure, draped in Leviathan Furs—a testament to his prowess and survival skills. These furs provide not only protection against the Wildsea’s ferocious beasts. His primary weapon, an oversized hammer, is a fearsome tool of both destruction and protection.
Despite his rugged demeanor, Saguaro feels a deep sense of responsibility toward his fellow Ektus. Many settlements are plagued by internal disputes, resource shortages, and external threats. Saguaro’s mission is to act as a mediator and protector, ensuring the survival and prosperity of his kin.
The mountains of the Eaten East have always called to him, and Saguaro dreams of finding a peak untouched by the Wildsea’s chaos. This mountaintop represents more than a personal challenge; it’s a symbol of hope and sanctuary for his people.
Saguaro harbors a deep resentment toward the remnants of the old world, particularly the monuments erected by the ancestors who allowed the Wildsea to overrun the world. These structures are a painful reminder of humanity’s hubris, and Saguaro is determined to tear them down, one by one.
His thorny exterior, while a protective blessing, often proves a hindrance. Navigating through tight spaces or interacting with others can lead to unintended harm, creating a barrier between Saguaro and those he seeks to aid.
Saguaro’s sheer strength and the toughness of his thorns often lead to unintended destruction. From delicate artifacts to simple tools, his touch can be a curse, forcing him to be perpetually cautious. Despite his love for exploration, Saguaro struggles with seasickness. The constant motion of the Wildsea’s rolling canopy often leaves him disoriented and physically drained.
