Troika! is a rule-lite OSR type of game that is incredibly unique. Part of character creation is rolling d66 (two six-sided die as numerals for a two-digit number) and that is your background. This covers your class as well and each one is special to the game and nothing you’ve really seen before.
The game is described thusly on its official website:
TROIKA! is a science-fantasy role-playing game where you and your cosmopolitan group of fellow travellers explore the ends of the multiverse. You will fly on mystic barges, help dying gods, solve confounding crimes, plunder dead worlds, and meet strange & wonderful people.
A fully automated character creation system that generates exciting starting points for players to build upon. Weighty lists of spells and enemies to encounter. A baked-in plane-hoping setting which draws you into the world and allows you space to build upon its sturdy foundations.
My character was a Sorcerer at the College of Friends, something the game lets you define in detail, as with all its evocative backgrounds. Here’s the story of Seamus Dustfinger:
At the College of Friends, Seamus Dustfinger was a shining example of a promising student, deeply committed to the teachings of the Cordial Wizard God. His education revolved around lofty ideals—understanding the intricate destinies of pixies and the delicate balance of magical energies. Seamus believed wholeheartedly in the benevolence and structure imparted by his studies, thinking the world beyond the academy would reflect the harmony he was taught to cherish.
However, stepping out of the protective embrace of the college shattered Seamus’s idyllic vision. The world was a chaotic blend of unpredictable magic and moral ambiguity, far removed from the orderly theories he had embraced. Disillusioned yet determined, Seamus now embarks on a journey to find his place, hoping to bring some semblance of the harmony he once believed in, while grappling with the harsh truths of the outside world.
