I am conflicted over the Basic Roleplaying system, the engine that runs things like Call of Cthulhu and this game. I see these character sheets and my eyes just glaze over because it’s so much stuff. I’ve found the layout for the character creation process in these books is…not great. I think perhaps I’ve been spoiled from rules light games and systems with great flowcharts. I think I created this character correctly, but I’m not editing this. Took me three hours.
Here is how the fantasy ttrpg Runequest is described on its official website:
RuneQuest is a roleplaying game of heroic fantasy rich in magic, mystery and extraordinary adventure, set in the world of Glorantha.
RuneQuest is filled with mortals and gods, myths and cults, monsters and heroes. The most powerful building blocks of the universe are the Runes, mystical symbols that permeate everything, and mastery of Runes allows astonishing feats of bravery and magic.
RuneQuest’s influences are Bronze Age cultures where the relationship between mortals and the gods is much stronger. In Glorantha, the deeds and actions of the gods are history, and are very much active forces in shaping the day-to-day lives of all living things.
Adventurers are a product of their cultures and their clans, with compelling family histories, complete with all that entails. They begin play knowing not only who they are, who their family is, what clan they belong to, but with personal history that gives them experience and momentum going forward.
Players create adventurers and customize them as desired using a skill-based experience that rewards your character mechanically for the choices they make in game. All adventurers use magic, including powerful Rune spells that channel the very power of the gods.
Combat in RuneQuest is lethal. Shields shatter when hit hard enough, limbs can be disabled, and even the weakest of opponents get off a lucky shot that can take out an experienced foe.
This is Vishi, a Praxian apprentice shaman. I am glad to be done with this character creation session.
