So the former student who was staying with us is now with another parent, not the one who was causing the horrible neglect in her life. We were sad to see her go, but we had an absolutely fantastic week having her in our home. While she was here, we watched a couple of horror films: Hereditary and Us. She loved both of them, pointing out the psychological aspects of each that made them a cut above a jumpscare movie. We are still in touch, and I am sure there are many more movies in our future.
Taika Waititi has been hired by Netflix to develop two animated series based on Roald Dahl’s writing. The first is a show based around Charlie & the Chocolate Factory, and the second is a spotlight on the Oompa Loompas. This second series particularly intrigues me because I could easily see Waititi reimagining the Loompas as a version of his own Maori people in something akin to the film Boy. Netflix is also working to develop programs based around Matilda, The BFG, and The Twits. That last show stands out to me because that is one of my favorite Dahl books of all time and a perennial favorite to read to my students every year.
I’m not quite sure what Extra Ordinary will be but it looks delightfully insane!
The Platform is giving me strong Kafka/Cube vibes
Interesting tone to The Other Lamb, a dark film about a girl born into a cult.
Another film from the producers of Get Out and Us, Antebellum looks to have a great hook.
