Solo Tabletop RPG Review & Actual Play – Little Town Part One

If you have been following this blog for several years, you already know I love Twin Peaks and David Lynch. I first saw the series when it originally aired, and I was only 9 years old. Despite being far too mature for my age, I was captivated by the show’s tone. It was unlike anything my little brain had ever experienced and has permanently affected how I approach art my entire life. When I saw there was a solo tabletop rpg based on Twin Peaks and using the Apocalypse World engine, it was like everything I loved was distilled down into a single object. I also discovered the existence of this game the week of my birthday. It was a no-brainer to purchase this one, and I’ve been having a lot of fun with how it uses elements from other solo game systems to evoke the feel of Twin Peaks.

Before we jump into the game, I’d like to review more of how I built my character of Slingshot. In Supersworn, you switch out your spaceship for your headquarters. As for my other Assets, I chose Tendrils as it was the very “slingin'” power I had in mind for this blatant Spider-Man knockoff. Starting out, Tendrils can provide +1 if used in a non-combat Move, and they add another Momentum to whatever the specific Move offers typically. I chose Journalist to go with Christopher Kelly’s background as a collegiate reporter, which gives me +1 to any Gather Information or Compel moves in the context of a story I’m working on. Finally, I picked Loyalist, which lets me add +1 when I Aid an Ally (in a solo instance, this would be friendly NPCs). On a strong hit with a match, this Asset lets me mark my Bonds track.

Solo Tabletop RPG Review – Be Like a Crow

This was the first tabletop rpg I have been approached to review by the company that publishes it. That made me feel quite good, and I hope I do justice for every game I review here. If you’re a regular reader of these solo TTRPG reviews, you know I was a newcomer to these games circa 2011. After being very enthused by the gaming scene for a few years, I fell out of love with it due to the reasons many hobbies go sour for people these days. However, this year’s discovery of the plethora of solo games and gaming tools has reinvigorated my joy. One thing to note is that my preference as I perused the ttrpgs back during my first round with them was that I just really wasn’t an Old School Renaissance guy and, in fact, preferred what was sometimes referred to as “story games,” i.e., games that are fiction first rather than crunchy with stats or heavily dependent on mapping and measurement. As a result, I wasn’t exposed to certain kinds of games, and I especially have never played a hex crawl before.

Stepping away from my regular routine with these solo tabletop RPGs, I will be playing with a very preliminary but still well-developed fan hack of Ironsworn: Starforged that is superhero themed. I previously reviewed and played with Ironsworn and Starforged; however, superhero tropes are in my wheelhouse more than fantasy ones, so I expect this to go even smoother than those. Supersworn takes these systems and makes some tweaks so a player can be a superhero in a world similar to those of DC, Marvel, or even a universe with a wildly different take on capes.

Even today, with so many diverse tabletop RPGs for people to enjoy, the mainstream response to hearing about ttrpgs is for people to think of Dungeons & Dragons. While DnD certainly created a structure for a very dominant roleplaying style, it is not the be-all and end-all of the hobby. With recent decisions by DnD’s owners, Wizards of the Coast, to try and limit the open gaming licenses, which allow third parties to create content for the game and send Pinkerton agents to harass & threaten a streamer who legally purchased material WOTC accidentally sent out early, it’s time to find a new game. One thing that helps to expand your horizons is to engage with something wildly different than you are used to, and Alone Among the Stars is nothing like DnD.

The Wretched by Chris Bisette has spawned a whole subgenre of solo ttrpgs using that game as its framework. Many provide variations on that base game’s mechanics of dice, playing cards, and block tower. Galatea’s take on these mechanics perfectly fits its premise and tone.

The title references the Greek myth of Pygmalion. In the story Pygmalion, the sculptor carves a statue of a beautiful woman out of ivory. He prays to Aphrodite that she might come to life as he’s fallen in love with the image of her. His wish is granted, and the two marry and live happily ever after. This story has inspired many narratives about artificial life, including the origins of the Wonder Woman character.

Worldbuilding and mapmaking make up many of the solo games I come across on itch.io. It makes sense because these activities are things people already do casually. These games provide formal structures to guide your imagination and create an end product that can stand on its own or be used as a jumping-off point for another solo system or as a setting for a campaign you’re running for others. Ex Novo is one of the more popular and well-known of these types of role-playing “toys.”

If it wasn’t for Samantha Leigh, I don’t think I would be doing solo tabletop rpg reviews on this blog. Through their TikTok posts, I discovered that itch.io was the place to go for indie RPGs, especially solo ones. Now I have a massive list of games I want to play and review, and I can’t say that would have happened without their infectious enthusiasm about games. So, it felt natural to eventually review their game Anamnesis. It looked plain from the outside, with no bold, colorful stylized art, mainly text with a simple cover. Yet, within this game is a powerful creative tool.

Read part three of this series here.

The Vigilant nears its first destination on its first shortened FTL jump. Kei Becker searches the ship’s supplies for anything that might help Rozhan Kane’s damaged eyes but comes up short. Kane weakly assures Kei that he will be okay; they will reach Lyra and find sanctuary there. Astrid is watching the sensors as they get closer to ending the jump while Jorruns is trying to brainstorm ways to keep the engines running a little longer. Kei notices those two keeping their distance from each other, with Astrid not attempting to hide her dislike of Essence-using laborers from the Trade Enclave. In better times, Kei might address this tension, but now, people seem to focus on their tasks, and more significant threats are happening.

Read part two of this series here.

The Vigilant gracefully glides through the vast expanse of space, weaving its way through the remnants of long-abandoned planet-cracking mineral drills & shards of the ancient facilities that once dotted Orcus’ surface. As it approaches this floating graveyard, the hull groans under the stress of sudden turbulence as if protesting the eerie surroundings.

The graveyard itself is a haunting sight. Metal carcasses of massive, once-grand spaceships float listlessly in the void, their lifeless frames casting shadows in the darkness. Debris and wreckage are scattered everywhere, testaments to the violent ends of these colossal vessels. They had been coming here to pick up for distribution or in orbit, waiting for clearance to jump. Their crews never fully understood what was happening.
